NASA announced Sunita Williams’ retirement, effective December 27, 2025. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised Williams as a trailblazer in human spaceflight, highlighting her contributions to space exploration and commercial missions to low Earth orbit.
Born in Ohio, Williams considers Massachusetts her hometown. Her spaceflight journey began in 2006, with missions on Space Shuttle Discovery and Space Shuttle Atlantis. Throughout her career, she demonstrated technical skill and leadership, setting records and inspiring future generations.
Williams’ space missions included commanding Expedition 33 and conducting spacewalks to repair station equipment. Her final mission in 2024, aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, lasted nine months, contributing to NASA’s research and exploration efforts.
