The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has expressed deep concern and shock over the reported detention of a young lawyer during proceedings at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The SCBA urged Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant to take appropriate institutional cognizance of the matter and consider corrective measures. Referring to the recent incident at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, the SCBA highlighted that a young advocate was allegedly directed to be taken into judicial custody for 24 hours during court proceedings before Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao.
The SCBA emphasized that the incident has raised serious concerns among members of the Bar nationwide and has deeply disappointed young legal professionals. It stressed the importance of mutual respect, dignity, patience, and institutional balance in the relationship between the Bench and the Bar. Advocates were noted as officers of the court who play a crucial role in the administration of justice.
The SCBA underscored the significance of maintaining decorum and discipline in court proceedings for the rule of law. However, it also highlighted the need for judicial authority to be exercised fairly and with balance, especially when dealing with young lawyers who are still learning and growing in the profession. The Bar body cautioned against actions that could instill fear, humiliation, or intimidation among young advocates, as these could negatively impact the independence of the Bar and the efficiency of the justice delivery system.
