The Supreme Court has revoked the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to a man accused in a dowry death case from Uttar Pradesh. The Court deemed the relief as legally unsustainable and warned against trivializing crimes against women. Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi allowed the appeal by the deceased woman’s father, instructing the accused husband to surrender within a week.
The case involves the suspicious death of a woman in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, within seven years of her marriage in February 2019. The deceased’s father alleged that despite substantial dowry payments, the husband’s family demanded more, leading to physical and mental abuse of the woman. The deceased had reported being assaulted and threatened by her in-laws before her demise.
Investigation resulted in a charge sheet against the husband and his parents under relevant laws. The Supreme Court criticized the Allahabad High Court for granting bail to the accused husband, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense. The Court highlighted the prevalence of dowry deaths and the need to address this issue seriously to protect women’s rights.
Expressing concern over rising dowry-related deaths, the Supreme Court emphasized the need to prevent such crimes and ensure justice. The Court underscored the importance of considering the gravity of crimes against women when granting bail. The apex court directed an expedited trial in the case, stressing the urgency of addressing crimes related to dowry harassment.
