The Supreme Court expressed worry about students facing challenges with the CBSE’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for evaluating Class 12 board exam papers. During a hearing, the court sought assistance from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to address the issues. The government was urged to find a lasting solution to the problems arising from the evaluation process.
The Union government was advised by the apex court not to view the proceedings as adversarial. Solicitor General Mehta informed the court that a commission had been set up to review the OSM mechanism and suggest improvements. The court directed Mehta to present a status report detailing the actions taken by the government and CBSE to tackle the concerns raised.
A petition highlighted irregularities in the OSM system, alleging arbitrary assessment due to scanning errors and portal glitches. It claimed that students’ rights under the Constitution were violated. The plea also mentioned issues like inadequate teacher training, missing pages in scanned sheets, and incomplete evaluations. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 24.
