The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on a plea filed by Allahabad High Court Justice Yashwant Varma. Justice Varma faces impeachment proceedings after a cash-discovery incident. The plea challenges the Lok Sabha Speaker’s decision to form a three-member inquiry committee against him under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.
The Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma heard extensive arguments from all sides. Despite Justice Varma’s request for more time to appear before the inquiry committee, the bench rejected the plea. Senior advocate Siddharth Aggarwal, representing Justice Varma, asked for an extension to submit a written response, but the request was declined by the Bench led by Justice Datta.
The Lok Sabha Speaker’s inquiry committee had asked for Justice Varma’s response in November 2025. A deadline extension was granted until January 12, 2026, for filing a written reply. Justice Varma was also directed to appear before the committee on January 24. The writ petition filed by Justice Varma challenges the Lok Sabha Speaker’s decision on procedural grounds.
