The Supreme Court has initiated suo motu cognisance of the suspected dowry death of model Twisha Sharma at her matrimonial home in Bhopal. The case, registered as “In Re: Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of a Young Girl at Her Matrimonial Home,” is scheduled for hearing on May 25. Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal, leading to allegations of dowry harassment and procedural irregularities in the investigation.
Amid the controversy, Twisha Sharma’s family has raised concerns about procedural lapses in the initial probe, delay in filing an FIR, inconsistencies in the post-mortem examination, and potential evidence tampering. Following public outcry, the Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the case. Twisha Sharma’s husband, the prime accused, has been remanded to seven days of police custody.
In a significant development, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has ordered a second post-mortem examination of Twisha Sharma’s body to be conducted by a medical team from AIIMS Delhi. Additionally, the state government has sought the cancellation of interim bail granted to Twisha Sharma’s mother-in-law, citing non-cooperation and concerns about evidence tampering. Twisha Sharma’s family has demanded a swift trial and a court-monitored investigation into the alleged dowry-related harassment she faced.
