The Surat Cyber Crime Police uncovered a nationwide fraud scheme originating from a Gurugram-based call center. The scam involved cheating a woman out of over Rs 1.77 crore over five months under the guise of weight-loss treatment. Four individuals have been arrested, and a call center with around 100 to 150 staff members was raided.
The case unfolded when a Surat resident responded to a Facebook ad for weight-loss medicines. Subsequently, she was contacted via WhatsApp by individuals claiming to represent Curest Science & Wellness Private Limited. The scammers assured her of personalized health assessments, medicines, and guidance for weight loss. The victim was coerced into making payments through convincing presentations and repeated communication.
The accused individuals, posing as various personas, coerced the victim into purchasing medicines through a pre-planned conspiracy. The victim lost a total of Rs 1,77,40,500 between January and June this year, with demands for further payments even after significant sums were transferred. The Surat Cyber Crime Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law and made several arrests in connection with the fraudulent scheme.
