Sussex all-rounder James Coles has been selected for his first England One-day International squad, joining the 16-member team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India. Alongside Coles, fast bowler Josh Tongue has also earned his debut ODI call-up. England has reintroduced Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood, with Jofra Archer making a return to the 50-over setup after a rest period during the Sri Lanka ODI series earlier this year.
The inclusion of James Coles in the squad has sparked interest as England gears up for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Coles, a 21-year-old left-handed batter who bowls left-arm spin, has consistently impressed in domestic cricket, providing England with an additional all-round option. The selection of Liam Dawson alongside Coles underscores England’s focus on bolstering their spin-bowling resources.
Josh Tongue’s selection comes on the back of his strong performances in Test cricket. He joins a formidable pace attack that includes Archer, Atkinson, and Mahmood. Atkinson makes a comeback from injury, while Mahmood is back in contention for ODIs after missing England’s winter fixtures due to a knee problem.
England will miss Brydon Carse, who is recovering from a hand injury, and Jamie Overton, sidelined with a quad issue. The batting lineup features key players like captain Harry Brook, former skipper Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Tom Banton, Will Jacks, Sam Curran, and Rehan Ahmed as England aims to solidify their best combination for the upcoming World Cup cycle.
On the other side, India has announced a full-strength squad for the 50-over series, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (subject to fitness), and Jasprit Bumrah set to participate. The ODI series will kick off at Edgbaston on July 14, followed by matches in Cardiff on July 16 and Lord’s on July 19.
