AMMK General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran raised concerns about the Tamil Nadu government’s capability to maintain significant industrial investments. This comes after reports indicated that Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), which had previously agreed to a Rs 29,000-crore project in Thoothukudi with the former Tamil Nadu government, has now partnered with the Andhra Pradesh government. Dhinakaran emphasized the importance of the state’s industrial policy and investment follow-up mechanisms in light of this development.
The AMMK leader highlighted the potential impact on Tamil Nadu’s economy when companies, like MDL, opt to invest in neighboring states despite prior agreements with the state government. He pointed out that media reports suggested MDL’s shift to Andhra Pradesh for a new project, sparking concerns about Tamil Nadu’s effectiveness in converting investment commitments into tangible industrial ventures. Dhinakaran also criticized the lack of transparency regarding the outcomes of meetings between top officials and multinational corporations in terms of agreements, investments, and job creation.
Expressing worries over the state’s competitiveness in attracting and retaining investments post the government change, Dhinakaran stressed the need for corrective actions to bolster economic growth, industrial development, and job opportunities. He urged the government to ensure companies honor their MoUs with Tamil Nadu and encouraged efforts to draw fresh investments to enhance the economy and boost employment prospects.
