Taiwan has accused China of smuggling vegetables into the island through Vietnam to bypass import restrictions. Chinese companies are allegedly rerouting items like Napa cabbage and shiitake mushrooms through Vietnam, repackaging them as Vietnamese goods for import into Taiwan. Taiwan’s agriculture minister, Chen Junne-jih, has vowed to crack down on this practice, known as “origin washing,” by imposing strict penalties on violators.
Officials in Taiwan are planning to combat origin laundering by conducting aerial surveys in Vietnam to determine the actual volume of produce originating from specific areas. Democratic Progressive Party legislator Chiu Yi-ying highlighted the possibility of fraudulently obtaining Vietnamese certificates of origin for profits, urging the agriculture ministry to implement third-party isotope testing to verify product origins.
China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force for reunification. Recent tensions between the two nations have escalated, with China increasing military, political, and economic pressure on Taiwan. This comes after China suspended the import of Taiwanese pineapples in 2021 and imposed bans on various Taiwanese agricultural and seafood products, leading to accusations of economic coercion from Taiwan.
