Taiwan’s Coast Guard recently intervened to deter a Chinese oceanographic research vessel, the Xiang Yang Hong 22, from entering its restricted waters. The incident occurred off the coast of Su’ao in Yilan County, prompting the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) to dispatch patrol vessels to monitor and warn the Chinese ship to leave immediately. The CGA emphasized Taiwan’s sovereignty over its eastern exclusive economic zone and criticized China’s actions as attempts at hegemonic expansion.
The crew of the Taiwanese patrol vessel radioed the Xiang Yang Hong 22, asserting that China has no authority over the waters near Taiwan’s east coast and demanding its departure. Following radio warnings, the Taiwanese vessels flanked the Chinese research ship, creating disruptive maneuvers to compel its exit. Eventually, the Xiang Yang Hong 22 complied and left Taiwan’s restricted waters, as reported by the Central News Agency (CNA).
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te condemned China’s military expansion in the region and urged for peaceful cooperation based on equality and dignity. Lai Ching-te highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to self-determination and sovereignty, emphasizing that only the people of Taiwan can determine their future. He also expressed gratitude to G7 leaders for their support in maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
