Tamil Nadu is progressing in activating its rural fiber-optic network by initiating a tender to acquire 2.5 lakh Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). This move aims to extend high-speed broadband access to households, government offices, and public institutions statewide. The tender, released by the Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation (TANFINET), is a crucial step in implementing BharatNet Phase II, a rural broadband initiative led by the Union government.
Fiber-optic cables have been laid in numerous villages over recent years, linking village and block panchayats as part of the project. However, the lack of last-mile equipment has hindered the full utilization of this infrastructure for broadband services to individual users. The deployment of ONTs is set to address this gap by converting fiber-optic signals into broadband connections at subscriber locations, facilitating reliable high-speed internet access for homes, schools, hospitals, and government establishments.
The selected contractor will be responsible for supplying the ONTs, assisting in their installation, and providing maintenance for a period of four years, including a one-year warranty and three years of comprehensive support. This initiative is expected to enhance digital connectivity in rural Tamil Nadu significantly, enabling improved access to online education, telemedicine, digital banking, welfare services, and e-governance platforms.
By extending broadband connectivity to underserved regions, the project aims to narrow the digital gap between urban and rural areas. Establishing a robust digital infrastructure is crucial for attracting investments in information technology, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), business process outsourcing firms, and other knowledge-based industries. The expansion of broadband access to tier-2 and tier-3 towns is anticipated to enhance their competitiveness and create new economic prospects.
With the procurement of ONTs, Tamil Nadu is entering the final phase of converting its rural fiber network into a functional broadband ecosystem. This transformation ensures that the infrastructure developed under BharatNet translates into practical internet accessibility for citizens, institutions, and government agencies throughout the state.
