The Tamil Nadu government has set aside Rs 248.44 crore to purchase essential food items for Pongal gift hampers during the upcoming harvest festival. This allocation will benefit approximately 2.22 crore rice ration card holders in the state. The government’s initiative aims to provide festive support to households as part of the annual celebration.
An official order from the Food and Consumer Protection Department outlines the procurement plan, including raw rice, sugar, and full-sized sugarcane for the traditional Pongal gift hamper. Of the total amount, Rs 164 crore is designated for rice and sugar procurement, while Rs 84.70 crore is allocated for sugarcane purchase. The government has fixed the rates at Rs 25 per kilogram for raw rice, Rs 48.54 per kilogram for sugar, and Rs 38 for a full-sized sugarcane per ration card holder.
Efforts are underway to streamline procurement activities to ensure timely distribution before the Pongal festival, a significant celebration in Tamil Nadu. The Food and Cooperation Department is overseeing the process, instructing agencies to complete procurement and logistical arrangements promptly to prevent any delays. While the food components of the Pongal hamper are confirmed, discussions are ongoing regarding the cash component traditionally included in the gift.
