The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, faces a crucial test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with the upcoming election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. TVK has put forward J.C.D. Prabhakar, a seasoned leader and former AIADMK member, as its candidate for the Speaker’s position. Prabhakar, a three-time legislator, played a significant role in shaping the party’s structure and election agenda.
At 73 years old, Prabhakar, who won from the Thousand Lights Assembly constituency in Chennai, is expected to secure the Speaker’s post unopposed due to the ruling alliance’s current majority in the Assembly. Ravi Shankar has been nominated by TVK for the Deputy Speaker’s role. The ruling coalition, comprising TVK, Congress, Left parties, and supporting factions, holds the support of approximately 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, providing a comfortable margin for the government.
The election of the Speaker holds significance amidst internal turmoil within the opposition AIADMK, which is grappling with a potential split following its electoral setback. With only 47 seats won, the AIADMK is witnessing a power struggle between former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and senior leader S.P. Velumani. About 30 AIADMK MLAs have thrown their weight behind Velumani, advocating for his recognition as the legislative party leader, while 17 MLAs continue to support Palaniswami, intensifying the crisis within the party.
As both factions vie for leadership recognition, the Speaker’s decision on the official opposition leader is anticipated to have significant political ramifications for the AIADMK’s future. These developments unfold as the TVK government, having emerged as the largest party in the Assembly, seeks to solidify its position following the formation of the government with backing from former DMK-aligned opposition parties.
