Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has instructed a comprehensive overhaul and modernization of Amma Canteens in the state. These community kitchens, which mainly serve the urban poor and daily wage workers, will see improvements in infrastructure and food quality. Concerns over the deteriorating quality and taste of food at some outlets prompted this decision.
Vijay held a review meeting with senior officials after being made aware of the issues surrounding certain Amma Canteens. Emphasizing the crucial role these canteens play in providing affordable meals, he highlighted the need to maintain their original standards and public trust. Immediate steps are being taken to enhance facilities and ensure a better dining experience for beneficiaries.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of maintaining affordable, nutritious, hygienic, and consistently delicious food at the canteens. He directed officials to enhance amenities, strengthen infrastructure, and procure modern kitchen equipment for operational efficiency and quality control. A broader review of procurement systems and daily operations is expected to address reported deficiencies.
