Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a two per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners. This raise, from 58 per cent to 60 per cent, is effective from January 1, 2026, with retrospective application. Nearly 16 lakh individuals are expected to benefit from this decision, which mirrors the recent increase in DA for Central government employees.
The decision to raise the DA was made following the Union government’s elevation of the Dearness Allowance for Central government employees to 60 per cent. This move by the Tamil Nadu government is aimed at extending the same benefit to state government staff and pensioners. The state government emphasized that this increase demonstrates its dedication to the welfare of its employees and teachers, who are instrumental in implementing various welfare schemes and public services.
The hike in DA is estimated to lead to an additional annual expenditure of around Rs 1,230 crore for the state exchequer. Despite this financial burden, the government has committed to allocating the necessary additional funds to prioritize the well-being of employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners. This announcement coincides with the Tamil Nadu government’s rollout of administrative and welfare-related measures post the 2026 Assembly elections.
Employee unions and pensioners’ associations have welcomed this decision, citing that the increase will offer relief amidst escalating living costs and inflationary pressures. The revised Dearness Allowance will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026, with detailed orders regarding disbursement and arrears expected to be issued soon.
