Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay presented a confidence motion in the state Assembly to prove his government’s majority amidst political turmoil and divisions within the AIADMK. MLAs from the Congress, CPI, and CPI(M) officially supported Vijay’s administration, bolstering the ruling alliance’s position during the crucial floor test. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) members also backed the confidence motion, signaling broad support for the new government.
A faction of rebel AIADMK legislators, led by C.Ve. Shanmugham and S.P. Velumani, also backed the Vijay government during the trust vote proceedings, intensifying the internal crisis within the AIADMK post the election defeat. The confidence vote gains significance as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the largest party in the recent elections but lacked a majority in the 234-member Assembly. The government was formed with the support of Congress, CPI(M), CPI, and VCK.
During the debate on the confidence motion, VCK MLA Vanni Arasu raised policy demands, emphasizing the need for progressive reforms and welfare-oriented governance. Arasu advocated for a strict law against superstitious practices like astrology, promoting scientific thinking in society. He also urged diplomatic efforts to address the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen being detained by the Sri Lankan Navy near the Maritime Boundary Line, highlighting the importance of safeguarding fishermen’s livelihoods.
Arasu further appealed to the Vijay government to continue welfare schemes initiated by the previous DMK administration, including the Breakfast Scheme for school students. The Assembly proceedings continued amidst high political interest, with the ruling alliance expected to secure the necessary votes for the trust vote.
