Outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin acknowledged the election results on Monday, stating that the DMK would now operate as a constructive opposition. Stalin, in a social media post, congratulated the winners and respected the democratic choice of the voters. Reflecting on his government’s tenure, he highlighted the implementation of various welfare schemes and overall development during his administration.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the party had campaigned based on its governance track record and commitment to continuing welfare programs. Stalin expressed gratitude to voters, party members, and alliance partners for their support. He stressed the importance of resilience in political journeys, stating that the DMK’s ideology and purpose would persist despite victories and setbacks.
The election outcomes indicated a notable shift in Tamil Nadu’s political scenario, with actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making a significant impact. The TVK, in its electoral debut, emerged as the largest party in terms of seats secured and leads. As per the Election Commission of India data, the TVK won 82 seats and led in 25 constituencies.
On the other hand, the DMK clinched 44 seats and was ahead in 16, while the AIADMK secured 34 seats and led in 13 constituencies. Notably, Stalin himself faced defeat in the Kolathur Assembly constituency by the TVK candidate V.S. Babu. Despite this setback, the DMK managed to retain stronghold areas, securing victories in Gudalur, Coonoor, and Valparai constituencies.
Moreover, Congress candidate Viswanathan emerged victorious in Melur, and CPI’s T. Ramachandran won the Thally seat. The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, held in a single phase on April 23, recorded an 85.1% voter turnout, with over 4.8 crore votes cast.
