Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, also the President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to visit New Delhi on June 11 for the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be his second visit to the capital in a fortnight. The focus of the meeting is expected to be on governance and development, with keen interest from political observers on Vijay’s interactions with leaders of national opposition parties.
CM Vijay aims to highlight Tamil Nadu’s financial and developmental concerns during the NITI Aayog meeting. He is likely to seek increased support from the Union government for infrastructure projects, welfare programs, and other key initiatives crucial for the state’s upcoming Budget. Discussions may also revolve around pending financial allocations and the release of funds for centrally sponsored schemes.
The Chief Minister is anticipated to address issues related to rural employment programs, school education funding, and broader fiscal challenges faced by states before the Governing Council. This meeting comes at a critical juncture as India grapples with economic challenges, including the impact of instability in West Asia on global energy markets and rising costs for governments, businesses, and households.
Apart from the official agenda, attention will be on CM Vijay’s political engagements in Delhi. His previous visit on May 27 involved meetings with Prime Minister Modi and senior Union ministers, but he missed meeting Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. This absence sparked political discussions in Tamil Nadu, especially considering Congress’s alliance with the ruling TVK government.
It remains uncertain whether Vijay will hold talks with leaders of the CPI and CPI(M), parties offering external support to the TVK government. The visit gains significance amidst evolving dynamics within the INDIA bloc, with the DMK’s absence from recent alliance meetings and public disagreements with Congress leading to speculations on realignments in opposition politics. Vijay’s visit is seen as an opportunity to advocate for Tamil Nadu’s interests at the national level and strengthen TVK’s position in the changing landscape of opposition politics.
