Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to visit Karur on July 10 and 11, his first visit to the district since the tragic stampede during a TRK public meeting last year that claimed 41 lives. The stampede, considered one of the worst political rally disasters in recent times, led to national outrage and highlighted concerns over crowd management and event safety.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the incident under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Following the tragedy, security concerns and police restrictions prevented Vijay from visiting Karur immediately. Instead, he addressed the affected families through a video conference, offering condolences and support during the challenging period.
Vijay later met the families in Mamallapuram, providing financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to each affected family. The funds were promptly transferred to their bank accounts. He also assured further assistance after evaluating their long-term needs and family situations.
During his upcoming visit to Karur, the Chief Minister plans to meet the victims’ families once again to convey his condolences personally. This visit aims to reinforce the government’s commitment to assisting those impacted by the tragedy. Additionally, Vijay will participate in official government programs in the district, inaugurating welfare initiatives and development projects.
The Karur tour is expected to kick off the Chief Minister’s district-wide outreach program across Tamil Nadu. Subsequently, Vijay is likely to visit other districts to express gratitude for the public’s support in the Assembly elections and assess the progress of government schemes. These visits will involve attending official functions, launching new projects, and engaging with citizens to enhance grassroots governance and direct interaction with the people.
