A day after being sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay, the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), took the oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) during the inaugural session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly. The oath ceremony for the newly elected legislators was conducted at the Assembly Hall under the guidance of Pro-tem Speaker Karuppiah. This event marked the official commencement of the new Assembly post the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Vijay, who had previously taken the oath as CM by invoking “Andavan Meedhu Aanaiyaga” (in the name of God), chose a different constitutional affirmation while being sworn in as an MLA, stating, “Ulamara Urudhi Koorugiren” (I solemnly affirm with sincerity). Vijay assumed office as the MLA representing the Perambur Assembly constituency, a seat he retained after winning from both Perambur and Trichy East in the elections.
After deciding to continue as the Perambur representative, Vijay resigned from the Trichy East seat, leading the way for a by-election in that constituency. Following Vijay’s oath-taking, N. Anand, a senior TVK leader, also took the oath as the MLA from the T Nagar constituency, while Aadhav Arjuna was sworn in as the legislator from the Villivakkam constituency. The Assembly witnessed a lively atmosphere as the newly elected members entered the House for the first time after the significant electoral victory that brought TVK to power in its debut Assembly election.
The party emerged as the largest single party in the 234-member House and subsequently formed the government with the backing of alliance partners. During the session, Pro-tem Speaker Karuppiah congratulated the newly elected members and urged them to serve the people with dedication. He emphasized the importance of understanding the responsibility towards the public and working sincerely for their welfare. Karuppiah also highlighted the need for the new government to operate based on the principles of leaders like Periyar, Kamarajar, Velu Nachiyar, and Anjalai Ammal, while upholding rationalist and social justice values in governance.
