Strong opposition has been voiced by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) against Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam on the Cauvery river. The TNCC is determined to fight against the project, citing it as a threat to Tamil Nadu farmers’ rights and a breach of judicial orders. The TNCC emphasized that the dam plan contradicts the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s final award and the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling.
The TNCC, at a meeting of District Congress Committee presidents in Chennai, supported Manickam Tagore’s statement that no progress on the dam project should occur without Tamil Nadu’s approval. The party reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the interests of Cauvery delta farmers and continuing its opposition to Karnataka’s dam construction efforts. Another resolution congratulated Manickam Tagore on his appointment as TNCC president by the All India Congress Committee.
Acknowledging the appointment as a significant milestone for the party in the state, the TNCC highlighted that Congress, after decades, had not been part of the government until now. With two Congress ministers in the Vijay-led government, the party noted a new era in its history. The TNCC expressed optimism that Tagore’s leadership would enhance the organization, broaden the Congress’ voter base, and work towards winning all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the 2029 elections.
The TNCC lauded the performance of the TVK-led alliance government under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, recognizing its achievements within a short span. The government’s initiatives, including free electricity units, crop loan waivers, and welfare schemes, were commended. The TNCC praised CM Vijay’s leadership amid financial challenges, foreseeing his emergence as a significant political figure in Tamil Nadu.
