Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated a new multi-storey maternity and surgical block at the Institute of Social Obstetrics and Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children in Chennai’s Chepauk. The facility, costing Rs 32.32 crore, spans 66,658 square feet across a ground floor and two upper floors.
This new block, adding 100 beds to the hospital’s capacity, is equipped with advanced medical infrastructure to enhance care for women and newborns. It includes operation theatres, labour monitoring rooms, neonatal care sections, and specialized anaesthesia services, among other facilities.
After the inauguration, Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected the operation theatres and maternity units in the new block. The upgraded infrastructure aims to improve patient safety, reduce complications, and enhance maternal and infant health outcomes, responding to the hospital’s significant patient load.
Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian, Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran, and Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, P. Senthil Kumar, were present at the inauguration. Health officials highlighted that the new block will enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality maternal and neonatal care, supporting Tamil Nadu’s commitment to accessible healthcare for women and children.
