Tamil Nadu is making extensive preparations for the upcoming nationwide Census. Around 1.40 lakh enumerators will undergo a month-long training starting in late June. The household enumeration is scheduled to take place between August 1 and August 30.
The Census operation in Tamil Nadu will involve school teachers, corporation staff, and employees from various government departments who will serve as enumerators for door-to-door data collection. Currently, nearly 2,700 district-level field trainers are undergoing specialized training to prepare for the Census exercise.
M. Sundaresh Babu, the Director of Census Operations in Tamil Nadu, highlighted the crucial role of the field trainers in ensuring uniformity and accuracy in data collection. These trainers will train the enumerators on the procedures and techniques necessary for accurate household enumeration.
The enumerators, each assigned approximately 200 households, are expected to cover nearly 2.80 crore households in Tamil Nadu during the month-long survey. Before the field enumeration begins, residents will have the opportunity to participate in a self-enumeration phase from July 17 to July 31, where they can voluntarily submit their details online.
During the house-listing phase, which is the initial stage of the Census, detailed information on households and living conditions will be collected. This includes data on the number of residents, housing characteristics, access to basic amenities, ownership of vehicles, and other socio-economic indicators. The gathered information will be crucial for future planning, policy formulation, and the implementation of welfare and development programs.
