The Tamil Nadu government is expediting the appointment of key statutory positions before the upcoming Assembly elections. This move aims to finalize pending institutional appointments as the Model Code of Conduct is anticipated to be enforced soon. Notably, Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami has chosen not to participate in a crucial selection committee meeting.

Efforts are focused on enhancing the State Information Commission, responsible for managing Right to Information (RTI) appeals and complaints. To enhance efficiency and address backlogs, the government plans to increase the number of Information Commissioners. Two additional positions are set to be filled through a formal selection process scheduled for the following week. Currently, the Commission comprises the Chief Information Commissioner and six Information Commissioners, with two more members expected to join before election-related restrictions take effect.

A search committee, headed by former judge Justice K.B.K. Vasuki and including retired IAS officer M.P. Sivanarul and former IPS officer K. Radhakrishnan, has shortlisted candidates for these roles. Eligible individuals with administrative or legal backgrounds were invited to apply, following the standard procedure where Information Commissioners are appointed by the Governor based on a three-member committee’s recommendation.

The selection committee meeting is slated for February 13 at the Secretariat, although Palaniswami has declined the invitation to attend. Simultaneously, the government is initiating the appointment process for the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Heritage Commission, with applications accepted until February 18 and the appointment expected by month-end. Furthermore, direct recruitment for a Principal at the All India Civil Services Coaching Centre has been announced.

Senior officials emphasize the urgency in completing these appointments promptly to prevent delays once the election notification and Model Code of Conduct are enforced, restricting significant administrative decisions.
