The Tamil Nadu government has declared a special Pongal bonus for C and D category employees and pensioners for the 2024–25 financial year. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has issued an official order to provide additional financial assistance to support government staff and pensioners during the festive season.
Employees in C and D categories will receive an extra Rs 3,000 as Pongal bonus, as per the government order. Additionally, C and D category pensioners, along with family pensioners, will be given a special payment of Rs 1,000 to mark the occasion.
To aid lower-grade employees and retired personnel who rely on fixed incomes for household expenses, the State government has allocated a total of Rs 183.86 crore for the scheme. This allocation will cover the Pongal bonuses for C and D category pensioners, family pensioners, and former village officers eligible under the program.
The Finance Department has been directed to ensure prompt release of funds to ensure beneficiaries receive the amount well before the festival. Temporary and contract workers on lump-sum and consolidated pay will also receive a special payment of Rs 1,000 as part of the Pongal package, benefiting numerous individuals across various government departments and institutions in the State.
The government’s decision to extend financial aid to lower-income groups underscores its commitment to employee welfare and inclusive growth. This support aims to assist families in managing festival-related expenses and maintaining financial stability during the Pongal season.
Employee associations have lauded the announcement, emphasizing that the timely bonus release will offer much-needed relief amidst escalating living costs. With funds now sanctioned, departments have been instructed to expedite the disbursement process, ensuring all eligible beneficiaries receive the Pongal bonus before the festival commences.
