The Tamil Nadu government has given the green light for the inaugural Jallikattu event of 2026, scheduled for January 3 in Thatchankurichi village, Pudukkottai district. This marks the commencement of the state’s annual bull-taming season. The permission was granted through a government gazette by the Animal Husbandry, Dairying, Fisheries, and Fishermen Welfare Department.
The event has been sanctioned under the regulations of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, as amended by the Tamil Nadu Amendment Act, 2017. It is mandated that the Jallikattu must adhere strictly to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) outlined by the state government and the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
Authorities have directed the district administration to ensure the enforcement of all safety protocols concerning crowd control, public safety, and animal welfare during the event. Emphasis is placed on disaster preparedness and emergency response mechanisms. The directive also emphasizes that applications for hosting Jallikattu and similar traditional events must be submitted exclusively through the designated online portal for transparency and effective monitoring.
Thatchankurichi village has a significant role in Tamil Nadu’s Jallikattu heritage, traditionally hosting the inaugural event each season. Pudukkottai district, where the village is situated, is renowned for having the highest number of vaadivaasals, which are designated entry points for bulls, in the state. Previous years’ official data highlight the event’s magnitude, with hundreds of bulls, tamers, and spectators participating and occasional injuries reported.
Organizers of the Vinerpu Matha Jallikattu committee are actively preparing for the upcoming event, focusing on enhancing safety measures, crowd management, and inter-departmental coordination to ensure a smooth and incident-free execution of the traditional sport.
