The Tamil Nadu government has decided to postpone the increase in the fitness certificate fee for motor vehicles by three months. This move aims to ease the financial burden on transport operators in the state. Following a Government Order issued on February 17, 2026, the previous fee structure will continue to apply until further notice, offering relief to vehicle owners.
The Union Ministry had earlier raised the fee for fitness certificate tests and renewals, causing concerns among transport industry members in Tamil Nadu. Transport associations highlighted that the hike would negatively impact vehicle owners, especially lorry operators already struggling with escalating expenses. In response to these concerns, the state government has deferred the implementation of the revised fee, maintaining the existing lower rates for the time being.
Various transport associations, including the State Lorry Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owner Federation, had urged the government to reconsider the fee hike. They argued that the increased costs would burden operators and reduce their earnings. Noting the potential repercussions on drivers and workers in the sector, the government decided to delay the fee revision for up to three months.
The Transport and Road Safety Commissioner recommended the temporary deferment of the Union Ministry’s notification, citing the challenges faced by transport operators. In line with this advice, the Tamil Nadu government issued an order to suspend the fee hike and retain the current rates. This decision aims to provide short-term financial relief to operators while the state evaluates the broader implications of the fee adjustment.
