Government schools in Tamil Nadu are starting their enrollment campaign for the 2026-27 academic year, aiming to admit over four lakh students. This initiative, which began early last year to compete with private schools, continues this year. Officials hope the early start will attract more parents to consider government schools before opting for private institutions.
Authorities have directed school heads and teachers to focus on enrolling children who have completed five years of age in anganwadis. They aim to ensure these children are enrolled in nearby schools or institutions. Education department officials will conduct awareness campaigns for parents, showcasing the improvements in government schools over recent years.
The department plans to highlight facilities like smart classrooms, modern laboratories, upgraded infrastructure, and digital learning tools introduced through state initiatives. They believe these features, combined with trained teachers and welfare programs, will enhance public trust in government schools. To motivate schools, those enrolling at least 50 more students than last year will receive certificates of appreciation.
Officials aim to boost outreach efforts in localities through this recognition. Approximately 4.3 lakh students were enrolled in government schools last year, with half of school-going children choosing government or government-aided institutions. The other half opt for private schools. With over eight lakh eligible children for enrollment this year, officials are focused on ensuring every eligible child is enrolled while increasing the share of students in government schools.
The primary goal is to enroll all eligible children in school and raise the overall percentage of students in government institutions. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi will inaugurate the state-level enrollment drive on Monday.
