The Tamil Nadu government is set to launch an expanded free electricity scheme for domestic consumers in the upcoming billing cycle. This initiative aims to bring relief to numerous households in the state and increase the number of consumers benefiting from zero electricity bills. The billing software of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has been updated to incorporate eligibility verification, subsidy calculations, bill generation, and accounting provisions under the revised policy.
The new policy, a key initiative of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, will offer free power for up to 200 units to domestic consumers using less than 500 units bi-monthly. Currently, around 67 lakh consumers using under 100 units already enjoy free electricity. With the extension to 200 units, it is anticipated that approximately 1.2 crore households will have zero electricity bills. Additionally, about 85.83 lakh consumers are expected to witness a reduction of around Rs 235 in their electricity bills every two months.
The software upgrade process commenced promptly after the government’s announcement on May 10 to ensure a seamless implementation of the scheme in the forthcoming billing cycle. This welfare measure is aimed at easing financial burdens for lower- and middle-income families by reducing household expenses. TNPDCL officials emphasize that the state government will bear the financial load resulting from the subsidy expansion.
