The Tamil Nadu government is planning a significant expansion of nursing education in the state by increasing the number of seats in government nursing institutions from 796 to 1,651. This move will nearly double the existing capacity, adding 855 new seats across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The aim is to strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce and enhance accessibility to professional nursing education for students from economically weaker backgrounds.

This expansion is part of the government’s strategy to boost allied health education alongside the growth of MBBS and BDS programs in government medical colleges. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME&R) has approved the proposal, and the additional seats are set to be introduced pending regulatory approvals.

Under the proposal, a total of 660 new BSc Nursing seats, 120 Post Basic BSc Nursing seats, and 75 MSc Nursing seats will be created across 13 government institutions. The largest increase will be in the undergraduate BSc Nursing program, with the intake rising from 510 to 1,170 seats.

Most of the new undergraduate seats will be accommodated in six new Model Colleges of Nursing, which are close to completion on the campuses of government medical colleges. Each institution is being established at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore, with financial support from the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. Additionally, the Government Medical College, ESI, and Hospital in Coimbatore will also receive extra seats.

According to the proposed seat matrix, various government medical colleges will receive new BSc Nursing seats, with 100 seats allocated to some colleges and 60 to others. The government also plans to expand higher nursing education by distributing 120 additional Post Basic BSc Nursing seats and 75 new MSc Nursing seats among specific Colleges of Nursing.

Officials highlight that this expansion will offer more opportunities for students who cannot afford private nursing education. The annual tuition fees in government institutions are significantly lower than those in private colleges, making education more accessible. This move is expected to help meet the increasing demand for trained nursing professionals in the state.
