Hours after the Tamil Nadu government introduced a dedicated WhatsApp helpline for reporting bribery complaints against officials, a video surfaced on social media allegedly showing N.V. Veera, a TVK functionary, accepting Rs 30,000 from a contractor. The authenticity of the video has not been independently verified, but it has sparked political controversy and discussions on corruption in local bodies.
The footage suggests that the payment was related to clearing a contractor’s pending bill after road works. However, there is no official confirmation on the exchange circumstances, and no formal complaint has been made public yet. Authorities have not confirmed if any initial inquiry has been launched.
On the same day, the state government intensified its anti-corruption efforts by directing government offices to display bilingual awareness boards against bribery prominently. The boards carry the message “Bribe giving and receiving is an offence” along with a WhatsApp helpline number for reporting corruption to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC).
The video has stirred widespread social media debate, with opposition parties and users questioning the government’s stance on corruption. Despite the video’s impact, neither the Tamil Nadu government nor the TVK leadership has issued an official statement regarding its authenticity or any potential actions against the involved party member.
