Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is embarking on a project to install floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) systems on various reservoirs in the state. This initiative aims to overcome land limitations for traditional solar parks and promote the adoption of clean energy. Seven locations, including prominent reservoirs like Mettur Dam and Vaigai Dam, have been earmarked for the initial phase.

The chosen sites were selected based on their size, water availability, and suitability for floating structures. TNGECL has sought permission from the Water Resources Department (WRD) to utilize these reservoirs. Additionally, a private company has been enlisted to conduct feasibility studies focusing on technical aspects and environmental impact.

The project, anticipated to produce approximately 100 MW initially, is part of Tamil Nadu’s untapped floating solar potential estimated at 3,000 MW across 57 reservoirs. The feasibility assessment will consider factors like project expenses, integration of battery energy storage systems, reservoir depth, and site suitability. Despite higher upfront costs compared to ground-mounted solar plants, TNGECL sees long-term benefits in reducing reliance on coal-based power generation.

Floating solar technology is gaining traction as a viable alternative due to land scarcity for large-scale solar expansion. TNGECL plans to expand the project based on the success of the pilot phase, aiming for significant cost savings in the coming years.
