Tamil Nadu’s Handlooms and Textiles Minister R. Gandhi stated that preparations for the annual Pongal gift distribution have been finalized. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to formally announce the benefits for ration card holders in the state soon. The government is ensuring that the Pongal gift package reaches all families before the festival, with distribution set to be completed by January 10.
The public is keen to know if the government will include cash assistance along with the traditional Pongal gift hamper. Minister Gandhi refrained from confirming a monetary component, mentioning that all decisions will be officially disclosed by the Chief Minister. The issue of cash assistance has gained attention, particularly considering past practices.
During the AIADMK regime in 2021, the government provided Rs 2,500 along with the Pongal gift, the highest cash amount ever given. After the DMK took charge, the cash component was reduced to Rs 1,000, sparking mixed reactions. With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, there are expectations of a possible increase in the cash component this year.
Senior ministers have reportedly discussed the option of offering Rs 5,000 to all ration card holders. However, financial commitments, including monthly assistance to women heads of families, have strained the state’s finances. Speculation suggests the government might opt for a middle ground by providing Rs 3,000 in cash along with the Pongal gift hamper.
The Pongal gift hamper is anticipated to contain essentials like raw rice, sugar, and a whole sugarcane, continuing the traditional practice. As the festival nears, people in Tamil Nadu are eagerly awaiting the official announcement, which is expected to influence public sentiment ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
