Tamil Nadu is gearing up for increasing temperatures as the Regional Meteorological Centre predicts a gradual rise in heat levels from Thursday, even before the peak summer season. Dry weather conditions are anticipated across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until Friday, with minimal rainfall expected in most areas. However, isolated light showers may occur in the hilly regions of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris on Friday.
Starting Saturday, moderate rainfall is forecasted in various districts along the Western Ghats for three days, offering some respite from the escalating temperatures. The weather department projects that maximum temperatures, near normal on Wednesday, could surge by up to 3 degrees Celsius over the next few days. In Chennai and its outskirts, dry weather is expected with daytime temperatures hovering around 34 degrees Celsius.
Experts are cautioning about a potentially intense summer in Tamil Nadu this year, attributed to global climate changes and the potential onset of a strong El Nino event. M. Rajeevan, former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlighted the likelihood of an El Nino occurrence during the upcoming monsoon season, which could intensify significantly. While uncertainties persist, a clearer assessment is anticipated by May 2026, emphasizing the importance of preparedness by authorities.
El Nino events have the reputation of disrupting India’s monsoon patterns, especially the Northeast Monsoon crucial for Tamil Nadu’s annual rainfall. A severe event might cause delays or weaken these rains, heightening the risk of extended dry periods and water scarcity. This situation could strain reservoirs supplying drinking water to Chennai and nearby areas. In agricultural regions like the Cauvery delta, reduced rainfall could impact crop cycles and yields, leading to increased reliance on groundwater, further stressing already depleted aquifers and raising concerns about long-term water security.
