Tamil Nadu reached a significant milestone in renewable energy by achieving its highest-ever single-day solar power generation. The state’s solar power plants produced 60.4 million units of electricity on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 58.6 million units. This accomplishment highlights Tamil Nadu’s increasing leadership in renewable energy and the rapid growth of its solar power infrastructure.
Energy officials noted that the spike in solar generation played a vital role in meeting the state’s power demand, especially during peak daytime hours, while reducing reliance on thermal power stations. The record-breaking generation was attributed to clear skies, extended daylight hours, and intense summer sunshine, enabling solar plants to operate more efficiently throughout the day.
Tamil Nadu’s favorable solar radiation for nearly 300 days annually positions it as one of India’s prime regions for large-scale solar energy production, according to Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) officials. The state has witnessed remarkable growth in its installed solar power capacity, which increased from 10,153 MW to 13,909 MW within a year, driven by utility-scale solar parks, private investments, and increased adoption by farmers and businesses.
Officials are optimistic about achieving the state’s renewable energy targets, with plans to add 5,000 MW of new solar capacity in the current financial year. The positive response from investors and the support from the farming community for solar initiatives are expected to aid in reaching this goal. With renewable energy playing a crucial role in Tamil Nadu’s power sector, the latest solar power generation record is set to bolster the state’s position as a leading producer of clean electricity in India, promoting long-term energy security and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
