Tamil Nadu is set to enhance technology education in schools by introducing an emerging technologies curriculum for students in Classes 6 to 8 in all government schools. This initiative includes developing specialized textbooks for higher classes as part of the State Board syllabus. The move aims to equip students with digital skills for the future and enhance technology-based learning in schools.
The emerging technologies curriculum is currently undergoing a trial run in about 5,000 government schools through the Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics, and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK). Following a positive response, the School Education Department plans to extend the program to all government schools catering to students in Classes 6 to 8.
This curriculum goes beyond traditional computer education by introducing students to artificial intelligence (AI), computational thinking, coding, and digital tools through hands-on, project-based learning. The focus is on enabling students to apply technology to solve real-world problems rather than just theoretical learning.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has already developed bilingual textbooks for Classes 6 to 8 under the TN SPARK program. Textbooks for Classes 9 and 10 are expected to be introduced in the upcoming academic year, with plans for Classes 11 and 12 textbooks in the future.
