Teenage tennis sensation Joao Fonseca has pulled out of the Hamburg Open due to discomfort in his right wrist, following hometown favorite Alexander Zverev’s earlier withdrawal from the ATP 500 clay-court event. Fonseca, in an Instagram post, stated that the decision was a precautionary measure to avoid worsening the issue before the French Open starting on May 24.
The 19-year-old Fonseca has been making a mark on the ATP Tour this season with a 10-9 record, showcasing impressive performances against top players. He reached quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo and Munich on clay courts and challenged top-ranked players like Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.
Despite his promising run, Fonseca’s withdrawal adds to the absence of Zverev, who cited persistent back problems for skipping the Hamburg Open. Zverev, a former champion and runner-up at the tournament, expressed disappointment over missing the event but emphasized the need to prioritize recovery for upcoming competitions.
Zverev’s departure, along with Fonseca’s exit, creates a significant void in the tournament lineup just before the main draw commences, impacting the excitement for fans and organizers alike.
