The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes emphasized that the Census in Telangana should proceed after the Central government adds 40 castes to the Central OBC list. Commission Chairman G. Niranjan has formally requested Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao to take the necessary steps for the inclusion of these 40 Backward Class castes from Telangana in the Central OBC list.
House listing under the Central Census program in Telangana is scheduled to take place from May 11 to June 9, 2026. Following this, population enumeration will be conducted from February 9 to February 28, 2027.
The Commission Chairman highlighted that only the 90 castes of Telangana will be considered in this Census due to the Central Government’s OBC list including only 90 Backward Class castes from Telangana. This exclusion raises concerns about potential underreporting of the actual number of Backward Class castes in Telangana.
Niranjan pointed out that while 130 castes in Telangana are recognized as Backward Classes, the Central Government has listed only 90 castes in the OBC category, leaving out 40 castes. This discrepancy may lead to a lower count of Backward Classes in Telangana than the real figure.
The state government and the Backward Class Commission have previously urged the Central government to incorporate these 40 castes into the Central OBC list. However, a decision on this matter is still pending.
