The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau cautions the public about cybercriminals using various tactics like flash sales and fake websites to deceive unsuspecting shoppers. Director Shikha Goel highlighted that fraudsters employ strategies such as offering heavy discounts on fake advertisements, creating deceptive websites resembling legitimate e-commerce platforms, and sharing fraudulent links through messaging apps and emails. These scammers also request advance payments through different methods and use fake customer service numbers to gather sensitive information.
To identify potential scams, citizens are advised to be wary of unusually low prices, unverified websites, and requests for payments outside official platforms. They should also watch out for urgent messages pressuring immediate payments and sellers insisting on advance transactions without secure checkout. Goel recommended shopping only on trusted e-commerce sites, verifying website URLs before purchasing, avoiding unsolicited shopping links, and checking seller reviews and return policies for safety.
Furthermore, individuals are cautioned against making direct payments to personal accounts or unfamiliar UPI IDs and encouraged to utilize secure payment options provided by the platforms. In case of falling victim to fraud, immediate reporting to the bank, preserving evidence like screenshots and payment receipts, and contacting the National Cybercrime Helpline or lodging a complaint online are crucial steps. Goel emphasized the importance of verifying offers before making purchases and exercising caution while clicking on links or making payments online.
