The Election Commission of India has officially approved Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) as the name of Kalvakuntla Kavitha’s new political party. This decision came after Kavitha launched her party as Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS) last week. The Commission handed over the approval letter at Kavitha’s residence in Banjara Hills.
Kavitha’s choice of the TRS acronym was influenced by its familiarity during the Telangana movement. The Election Commission reportedly rejected the name Telangana Rashtra Sena to avoid similarities with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the former name of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Kavitha had resigned from BRS and formally launched TRS on April 25.
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) was originally founded by Kavitha’s father, K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), in 2001 to advocate for a separate Telangana state. The party later transformed into BRS in 2022 with plans for national expansion. Kavitha’s decision to adopt the TRS name aligns with ongoing discussions within BRS to revert to TRS due to perceived disconnect with voters.
