The Telangana government has restructured the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three separate entities. Two new corporations, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri, have been formed, while six out of the 12 zones remain under GHMC. A Government Order (GO) issued on Wednesday established three municipal corporations: Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation, and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary to the Government, Metropolitan Area and Urban Development Department, has been appointed as the Special Officer for the three corporations. R.V. Karnan will continue as the Commissioner of GHMC, while G. Srijana has been reassigned as the Commissioner of Cyberabad Municipal Corporation. T. Vinay Krishna Reddy, who was the Additional Commissioner at GHMC, has been appointed as the Commissioner of Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation.
The reorganization of the existing GHMC was done after a thorough assessment of the administrative needs resulting from the city’s expansion. This restructuring follows the amalgamation of 27 surrounding urban local bodies with GHMC to form the Core Urban Region (CURE a few months ago. The government had earlier approved the division of GHMC into 12 zones and 60 circles in December last year.
Cyberabad Municipal Corporation will include areas from the Serilingampally, Kukatpally, and Qutbullapur zones, while Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation will cover regions from the Malkajgiri, Uppal, and L.B. Nagar zones. GHMC will oversee areas from Shamshabad, Rajendernagar, Charminar, Golconda, Khairatabad, and Secunderabad zones. The two new corporations will each cater to a population of 35 lakh, while GHMC will serve a population of 70 lakh.
The decision to split GHMC into three corporations coincided with the ongoing polling for municipal elections in seven corporations and 116 municipalities in the state. Elections for GHMC, the two new corporations, and other urban local bodies are anticipated to take place in April-May.
