Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and state Congress president Mahesh Kumar Goud have strongly criticized the detention of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and other Congress leaders in New Delhi. They view this action as an attack on democracy. The Telangana Congress has called for a protest named ‘Chalo Raj Bhavan’ on Wednesday to oppose the detentions. They have urged all party members, including ministers, MPs, MLAs, and other officials, to join the protest.
The Chief Minister has labeled the detentions as an infringement on the democratic right to protest. Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders were detained while protesting outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence against paper leaks and an alleged attack on students. Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi gathered outside the Congress president’s house before marching to the PM’s residence.
Revanth Reddy expressed solidarity with the youth demanding accountability from the Central government, stating that the entire Congress family and the nation support them. He emphasized that despite attempts to silence or suppress them, the anger of millions of young Indians fighting for justice and accountability cannot be subdued. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud also condemned the detention of LoP Rahul Gandhi, asserting that stifling the Opposition through detentions will not silence the truth or the people’s aspirations.
Mahesh Kumar Goud emphasized that every citizen has the constitutional right to peaceful protest and democratic expression. He reiterated the party’s unwavering support for Rahul Gandhi and commitment to upholding the Constitution and democratic values. Minister for Minority Welfare Mohammed Azharuddin also criticized the detention of LoP Rahul Gandhi, expressing concern over the intolerance towards democratic dissent reflected in detaining the Opposition leader for standing with students peacefully. He stressed the importance of addressing the concerns of the youth through dialogue and justice, rather than coercion.
