Known for its picturesque beaches, Ayurvedic wellness centers, historic sites, temples, and proximity to Kerala’s backwaters and hill stations, the coastal city has seen a rise in popularity. Meanwhile, Indore has emerged as India’s top trending city for domestic travelers, climbing seven positions to secure the 28th spot, driven by its cleanliness, street food culture, and heritage markets.
Almaty in Kazakhstan has become a newfound favorite for Indian tourists, jumping 12 places to 35th, offering stunning mountain views, adventure tourism opportunities, and a rich cultural experience. Notable rising destinations across Asia include Sapa in Vietnam, along with Okayama, Takamatsu, and Matsuyama in Japan, as well as Bandung in Indonesia. India’s tourism sector is rapidly evolving as a key economic driver, with substantial foreign exchange earnings and a notable rise to the 8th position in global tourism rankings.
Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has expressed optimism about India’s tourism potential, aiming for a top-four global ranking in the coming decade through infrastructure enhancements, branding initiatives, and heritage preservation efforts. Government initiatives like Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and PRASHAD have led to the development of themed circuits and modern facilities at cultural and spiritual sites, with 40 new projects worth Rs 3,295 crore approved under the SASCI scheme to boost lesser-known destinations. Efforts to enhance connectivity, infrastructure, and amenities, promote homestays through Mudra loans, invest in guide training, and reduce GST on hotel tariffs are part of the government’s strategy to make travel more accessible and enjoyable.
