In a significant event blending tradition with political drama, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, a seven-time Congress legislator, was chosen as the Speaker of the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly. This marked a historic three-way competition, showcasing the evolving political landscape in the state. For the first time, candidates from all major political factions in the Assembly contested for the Speaker’s position.
The ruling UDF presented Radhakrishnan as its candidate, while the Left nominated former minister A.C. Moideen, and the BJP-led NDA fielded B.B. Gopakumar. The voting process, overseen by Pro-tem Speaker G. Sudhakaran, saw 139 legislators participating.
Radhakrishnan emerged victorious with 101 votes, surpassing Moideen who secured 35 votes and Gopakumar with three. The announcement of his win was met with enthusiastic desk-thumping by members from various parties, showcasing a rare moment of unity.
