Three individuals tragically lost their lives in a fire that erupted on the second floor of the Delhi Metro staff quarters in Adarsh Nagar. The victims were identified as Ajay (42), Neelam (38), and their 10-year-old daughter, Janhvi.
The Delhi Fire Services were alerted about the fire around 02:39 a.m. on the second floor of a building within the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation staff quarters. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the bodies of the deceased.
A firefighter sustained injuries during the rescue operation. Authorities have confirmed the fatalities and mentioned that the police are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. Relief efforts are currently in progress, with more information pending.
This incident occurred shortly after another fire incident in Mandawali, where a gas cylinder explosion led to a fire in a five-story building. Three firefighters were injured in that incident but are now in stable condition. Investigations revealed that a short-circuit in a room heater triggered the fire, which escalated due to a subsequent gas cylinder explosion.
The Delhi Fire Services are facing a significant shortage of personnel, particularly in supervisory and frontline roles. This shortage has led to staff overload and raised concerns about fire safety in various establishments across the city. Currently, the agency has fewer assistant divisional officers than the approved number, impacting fire safety inspections and compliance checks at over 5,000 establishments.
