Three sex workers from Sonagachi in north Kolkata were arrested for abducting a man from the road and extorting Rs 89,000 from him. The incident took place in India’s largest red-light area. The police are interrogating the women to uncover any past fraudulent activities.
The man reported that he was forcibly taken into a room by the women after walking near Sonagachi. They confiscated his mobile phone and demanded money from him. When they realized he had little cash, they resorted to physical violence and threats.
The women threatened to make a video call to the man’s family to show his presence in the red-light area. They coerced him into revealing his phone’s pin number and an online money transfer app details. Subsequently, they transferred Rs 89,000 from his account to theirs before releasing him.
Following the ordeal, the man lodged a complaint at Burtolla Police Station, leading to the arrest of the three women. This is not the first such incident in Sonagachi, prompting authorities to investigate if the arrested women were involved in previous crimes.
