Chennai, Aug 17 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will reconvene on Monday after a four-day break and begin department-wise discussions on demands for grants for the 2026-27 financial year.
The House is scheduled to meet with demands relating to three key departments likely to be taken up on the first day. These include Health and Family Welfare, Revenue and Disaster Management, and Natural Calamities Mitigation.
Members from both the ruling TDP and the Opposition are expected to participate in the debate, raising issues concerning healthcare infrastructure, medical education, public welfare programmes, revenue administration and the state’s preparedness to handle natural disasters.
Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Dr K.K. Arunraj and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan will respond to the issues and questions raised by legislators.
The two ministers are also expected to announce new schemes and initiatives concerning their respective departments at the conclusion of the debate. The discussion on grant demands marks the next major phase of the Assembly’s budget session.
The newly elected TDP government presented its first general Budget for 2026-27 on August 5, followed by a separate Agriculture Budget on August 6.
The Assembly subsequently held a combined discussion on the two financial statements on August 7, 10 and 11. Legislators from the ruling party and the Opposition took part in the debate, highlighting the state’s fiscal position, development priorities, welfare commitments and challenges confronting agriculture and other sectors.
Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod replied to the debate on August 12, bringing the general discussion on the two Budgets to a close. The Assembly was then adjourned for four days in view of the Independence Day celebrations.
Unlike the broader Budget debate, the grant-demand discussions will focus on the proposed expenditure and policy priorities of individual departments. Members will have an opportunity to scrutinise allocations, point to shortcomings in the implementation of government programmes and seek new projects for their constituencies.
The government will also use the proceedings to outline its department-wise plans for the financial year.
The debate is expected to draw particular attention to the condition of government hospitals, availability of doctors, disaster-response arrangements and revenue services. Discussions on the demands of other departments will continue on subsequent sitting days in accordance with the Assembly’s schedule.
