Chennai, Aug 5 (IANS) Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Wednesday, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai forecasting unsettled weather across several districts.

The weather department said a weak low-pressure circulation persists in the lower atmospheric levels over the coastal areas of northern Tamil Nadu. The system is expected to influence weather conditions across the state and trigger thunderstorms and rainfall in several places.

According to the forecast, moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds is likely at isolated places in Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur districts during the day.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during spells of thunderstorms, particularly in areas where gusty winds and lightning are reported. Sudden rainfall could also cause temporary waterlogging and affect traffic movement in low-lying urban areas.

The RMC said rainfall activity is expected to continue in parts of the state over the next few days, with the intensity varying depending on local atmospheric conditions.

The hilly regions of Theni and Coimbatore districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall at one or two places on Thursday and Friday. People travelling through the hill areas have been advised to keep track of weather updates, particularly if intense spells of rain occur.

Meanwhile, Chennai is expected to experience a generally cloudy to partly cloudy sky on Wednesday. Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are likely at one or two places in the city and its suburbs during the evening or night. Daytime conditions in the state capital are expected to remain relatively humid before the possibility of showers increases later in the day.

The prevailing atmospheric system along the northern Tamil Nadu coast is expected to keep weather conditions conducive to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms. The weather department is continuing to monitor the system and its impact on rainfall distribution across Tamil Nadu. Further forecasts will be issued depending on changes in atmospheric conditions.

With thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast in several districts, people have been urged to exercise caution while outdoors and avoid taking shelter under trees or other vulnerable structures during lightning and strong winds.
