Skipper Tom Latham has expressed confidence in Henry Nicholls stepping in for Kane Williamson in New Zealand’s Test team following Williamson’s sudden retirement. Nicholls, aged 34, will take the No. 3 spot in the upcoming Test against England at The Oval. Despite playing only two Tests since 2024, Nicholls’ domestic performance has earned him this opportunity.
Latham highlighted Nicholls’ international experience and impressive domestic form as key factors in his selection. Nicholls, who excelled in the 2025-26 Plunket Shield season, emerged as the leading run-scorer with 870 runs at an average of 96.66. His ability to adapt to different batting positions makes him a suitable candidate for the No. 3 role.
Will Young was also considered for the position but Nicholls’ recent form and consistent performance tilted the decision in his favor. The team is adjusting to Williamson’s retirement, which came after New Zealand’s defeat in the first Test at Lord’s. Latham acknowledged the impact of Williamson’s departure, recognizing his significant contributions to the team over the years.
New Zealand is likely to make minimal changes to the team for the upcoming Test, with fast bowler Matt Henry expected to return if he overcomes back spasms. In contrast, England faces multiple changes following off-field incidents. Latham emphasized the team’s focus on preparing for the challenges ahead and maintaining confidence despite the previous loss.
